French Guiana, a French department bordered to the east by Brazil and to the west by Suriname, has a humid equatorial climate and is 97 per cent covered by tropical rainforest, criss-crossed by 112,000 km of waterways.
This hotspot of biodiversity is home to a rich variety of flora and fauna. The aquatic fauna is exceptionally diverse: there are over 400 species of fish, more than a hundred of which are endemic - that is to say, native to French Guiana and found only there - compared with just over 100 species of fish in mainland France.
